Gather Around the Amish Table by Lucy Leid intrigued me as soon as I saw it. We recently took a trip to Pennsylvania and took a little glimpse into Amish country while we were there. We tasted their well known shoo-fly pie and other delicacies as well. Because of that, I wanted to see what this cookbook was all about.
This cookbook is very well done. There are so many recipes of various categories including meats, breads, pies, jams and even some miscellaneous recipes. Unfortunately, this arrived at a super full season in our lives and I have not been able to try any of the recipes. I really want to try shoo-fly pie from scratch but this recipe is for 9 pies!!! and duh, I don't have time to make 9 pies in my current season. :)
However, I do hope to make a few of the recipes in the cookbook for the upcoming holiday seasons for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
My favorite touch in the book was that each recipe is accompanied by a story. It may be the story of how the author received the recipe, why the recipe is important to her, etc. but there is just a little blurb for each one. I thought this was a really nice touch.
I think this would be a great cookbook to give as a gift this holiday season or even as a birthday gift for someone you know who loves to cook. It's very well done.
